At Umubano Academy, we believe that there are many opportunities for learning and not all learning takes place in classrooms. In the school kitchen garden we continue to cultivate bananas and vegetables that we connect to science and environmental lessons. Students seeing bananas being planted, growing, maturing, ripening and being harvested is a far more practical way for students to learn some of the greatest and most important lessons, such as the sources of food, growing and protecting plants and healthy eating. Staff and students were all able to enjoy bananas harvested from our trees and also celebrate “Umuganura” ; the Rwandan National Harvest day.

At Umubano Academy, we believe that integrating Creative Arts in learning and teaching, through Educational Theatre, boosts students’ achievement. Students can sing, dance, act, create different visual works to express themselves or to apply new knowledge, skills and attitudes they have already acquired in all subjects. With these Primary 2 students, I have experienced how this highly engaging approach to teaching and learning develops critical thinking, innovation, cooperation, public speaking and confidence. Art is people’s life. Integrating it into our lessons is connecting the content to everyday life situations. Thank you so much Roberta Minotti for introducing this to Umubano Academy.
Children naturally like to play. A play-based learning environment motivates young children to learn well. During play-based learning lessons, supported by teachers, children can explore, experiment, discover and solve problems. Umubano Academy Early Years’ Educators implement play-based learning and encourage children’s interactions that aim to stretch their social learning.
Umubano Academy students had a great opportunity to attend Transform Africa Summit 2019 held at Kigali Convention Centre on 15 May 2019. Under the theme "Boosting Africa's Digital Economy, the Summit brought together 4000 people from all different geographical areas including Heads of State and Government, First Ladies, UN Broadband Commissioners, Regulators, Public & Private Sector, International Organizations, Industry Leaders, Investors, Entrepreneurs, Young Innovators, Civil Society and Academia. In the collaborative performance of our students with Mashirika, they presented “Africa Song poem”. They shared this strong message: “Africa is you and me”. Students were able to get together with people from a wide range of experiences, many of whom they may not encounter at home or at school. This was another strong learning moment for our students, as learning does not only take place in classrooms.
Teachers’ interaction makes teachers more professional. Corrie and Sally from St Albans School in the UK, have been sharing their experiences with Umubano Academy teachers in the Continuous Professional Development to staff. It’s exciting that teachers are well equipped and very ready for the second term 2019. We look forward to seeing more ICT used in classrooms for learning, children enjoying more play based activities in Nursery as well as more arts and sports’ activities done in the school. Our students will be the first beneficiaries of this British and Rwandan Teachers’ partnership and then the wider community. Thank you Sally, Corrie and St Albans School for making this possible!
On 11th Feb every year, the world celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. On this occasion the world marks the role of Science and gender equality in Sustainable Development. The theme for this year was: "Investment in Women and Girls in Science for Inclusive Green Growth". In the morning breakfast organised by RAWISE (Rwandan Association for Women in Science and Engineering) at Lemigo Hotel in Kigali, women scientists shared their experiences and they called upon young girls to step out of fear and take on science. Secondary school girls were inspired to join the science world.
Umubano Academy was honoured to be one of the three schools that were invited in this event. Many good messages were discussed like: Science is not hard, Science is not only for boys and men, Girls have potential…This matches with what we do at Umubano Academy where we include every child and make sure that he/ she reaches his/her full potential. On Saturday 15th December 2018, Children’s Creativity Lab located in Kicukiro-Kigali hosted the Kids STEM Expo 2018. The expo aimed at creating interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and math careers, foster the future generation of innovators, critical thinkers, problem solvers and to publicly recognize the achievements of talented children in Rwanda. Umubano Academy was represented by two students Esther and Blessed. They proudly exhibited how skilled they are and explained the role of ICT in education to people. The Expo ended with awards giving. Our students were given the Best Science Exhibitor certificate for their excellent showcase.
Today, Umubano Primary School closed the 2018 school year. It was a wonderful occasion to come together as stakeholders of the school to celebrate all of the achievements this year. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the ongoing support they have given to the school. I am incredibly proud of all we have achieved together – thank you all! During the end of year assembly, students presented their work and talents to parents and our Nursery Three and Primary Six students graduated ready to take on new educational challenges next year. Our 2017 alumni were also presented with their Primary Leavers Certificates from the Rwanda Education Board. We are excited to continue developing our partnerships with current and new stakeholders next year
World Teachers Day is celebrated on the 5th October every year. As tomorrow will be celebrated at the Sector we took the opportunity to thank our teaching staff today. Students marked the day at a special assembly where they performed songs, dance, poems and a play. It was an occasion for the students to say “Thank you Teachers”. Teacher Marion, the Nursery phase leader, gave speech on behalf of all teachers stating that teaching profession is powerful enough to impact the whole world. It was also an opportunity for the school administration to acknowledge the teachers hard work. All staff that completed first aid training were awarded their standard first aid certificates from Rwanda Red Cross.
Happy Teachers Day 2018! The Ministry of Education has recognized the contribution of Umubano primary teachers. They helped to train 700 School Based Mentors from all over Rwanda. This training was organised by the Ministry of Education through Rwanda Education Board (REB) together with The Project UMUBANO and A Partner In Education (APIE). The training was delivered by The Project Umubano Volunteers, APIE satff and Umubano Primary School teachers. It was a good occupation for every side to learn new skills through team teaching and participants’ interaction.
