Our Nursery section focuses on providing quality provision of the Rwandan curriculum subjects:
From N1-N3, students study in English and Kinyarwanda and take part in a wide range and variety of practical activities involving independent and group learning. Students learn how to problem solve and apply the knowledge they gain in a variety of contexts to ensure they retain these skills and competencies for life.
Our Nursery section has three classes:
We follow the Rwandan National Curriculum with special emphasis on English, outdoor activities and learning through play.
Nursery students at Umubano Academy are taught to read using the Phonics system whereby they first learn sounds, which they blend together to form words. They are taught to write the sounds as soon as they learn them, presenting a united approach to reading and writing. Children also have lots of appropriate reading material to support their literacy development in English and Kinyarwanda.
Children are encouraged to take part in a range of activities to support their mathematical skill development. This includes modelling with clay, counting activities, 1-1 correspondence and learning about shapes.
A wide range of resources, local and international, provide a wonderful environment for our students to explore and learn whilst having fun and developing their motor skills simultaneously. Classes have puzzles, phonics activities, counting resources, building blocks, games, art resources, and many more.
Every Nursery Classroom is equipped with a home play corner, fancy dress costumes and a range of play equipment. These resources were selected for the dual purpose of captivating the interest of learners and providing meaningful learning opportunities.
We recognise that our nursery students are still young and need to spend time outside, where they can explore their surroundings and focus on physical development. Our nursery sand pit, food garden and playground provide excellent learning opportunities for them, coupled with our imaginative teachers who are always coming up with new ways to entertain and stimulate our learners.
Students learn how to work together and independently to accomplish tasks, both in and outside of the classroom.
We encourage children to develop problem solving skills from an early age so they can apply their minds to any of life's challenges.
Our message of peace is advocated in everything we do and corporal punishment is never used at our school.
